Cars from US auctions — the all-in price

A bot and a site that calculate the full cost of a car themselves — instead of a manager who spends a day on it by hand.

How it was before

The price came
the next day.

A person writes to a manager and says roughly what they are after. The manager picks out options on their end, and only then calculates the price. From the first message to an actual number a day goes by, sometimes more.

There is a lot to add up: the auction fee, shipping across the ocean, the port, customs duty, excise, VAT, certification, delivery inside Ukraine, repairs. Every line on its own, and the rates depend on the year, the engine displacement and the fuel type.

And all that time the person sees exactly as many cars as they were shown. Meanwhile Copart and IAAI have over a hundred thousand lots listed right now.

What we built

Five things
that do the work instead of a person.

Our own database of lots

Over a hundred thousand cars from Copart and IAAI that can be bought right now. It refreshes every night: new lots come in, sold ones drop out by themselves. Nothing has to be done by hand.

Calculated using the Ukrainian customs formula

Customs duty, excise and VAT are calculated the way it happens at customs, taking the year, the engine displacement and the fuel type into account. Hybrids and electric cars have their own rates.

An estimate for the repairs

Roughly what it will cost to put the car right. That is what makes the final figure closer to reality than the plain arithmetic of “lot plus shipping”.

A subscription to new lots

If nothing fits today, the customer leaves their criteria and the bot messages them itself when the right thing shows up. Usually a person like that is lost for good.

A request in one tap

“I want this car” — and a finished request flies to the manager: which lot, the full estimate, the phone number. The bot asks for the number once and remembers it.

What it looks like

A bot in Telegram
and a catalog on the site.

A few questions instead of a form

A few questions instead of a form

Budget, fuel, year, make — all of it with buttons, nothing to type in by hand.

Lots listed right now

Lots listed right now

Photos from the auction yard, the year, the engine, the mileage, the drivetrain, the type of damage and how much time is left before bidding.

The condition of the car and the full estimate

The condition of the car and the full estimate

The “Details” button shows everything at once: airbags, title, mileage — and what the total is made of. The exchange rate is pulled live, and the hryvnia amount is calculated on its own.

Filters: make, model, year, body type, drivetrain, fuel, the condition of the car. Two separate sliders — the price at the auction in the US and the all-in budget once the car is in Ukraine.

Two prices at once

The list shows what the lot costs in the US and what it will come to here. Sorting by the soonest auction, by price or by mileage.

What people dig out by hand at an auction

Whether it starts, whether there is a key, whether the airbags are intact, what title and in which state, the estimated value and the estimated cost of repairs at American prices.

A worked example

Tesla Model 3, 2023

Here is what the figure the buyer sees is made of. Look at the line with the customs duty.

Auction lot · electric car
Price in the US
$8,550
Auction fee
$791
Shipping: US, sea, port
$2,200
Customs duty
$0
Excise
$115
VAT 20%
$2,073
Certification
$250
Repairs, roughly
$6,305
Total, all-in≈ $21,130

For electric cars the duty is zero and the excise is calculated differently. The bot knows this and does not tack on a few thousand that are not there. The exchange rate is pulled live, and the hryvnia amount is calculated on its own.

What this gives the company

The advertising stays the same,
what changes is what happens after it.

The manager does not do the arithmetic

The person who reaches them has already looked through a dozen cars, seen the prices and picked a particular lot. The conversation starts with the car itself.

A wider choice than any hand-picked selection

A manager physically cannot show a hundred thousand lots. The catalog shows all of them, so the customer does not go looking elsewhere because it feels like there is little to choose from.

It works at night and on weekends

People mostly sit down to scroll through listings in the evening, when the company's working day is already over.

The costs stay the same

The advertising does not change, no extra managers are needed. The only thing that changes is how many of the people who already came get as far as a conversation.

In the first three months after launch, the people who reach the manager mostly come with a lot already chosen, not with the question “so how much will it come to”. And inquiries went up by 30–40% along with it: choosing a car at a company where you can do it yourself is simply more convenient.

The same works for more than cars

Anywhere a customer waits while somebody adds numbers up by hand, that job can be handed over to a program. Tell us what you have — we will show you what it would look like.
